In short: Thanksgiving 2027 falls on Thursday 25 November in the United States and Monday 11 October in Canada — 45 days apart. Ten of our 192 country and territory calendars list a holiday called Thanksgiving in 2027, and those ten entries spread across eight different dates.
26 October 2026 — Thanksgiving 2027 is not a single date. It is ten separate entries across the national calendars we maintain, and the two most-searched versions sit six and a half weeks apart. This guide pulls every 2027 entry named Thanksgiving out of the 2027 public holiday calendar. Each date is checked against the rule that produces it, and each is tested for the long weekend it creates.
When is Thanksgiving 2027 in the United States?
Thanksgiving 2027 in the United States is Thursday, 25 November. Federal law defines the holiday as the fourth Thursday in November, and in 2027 that is the 25th: November opens on a Monday, so the four Thursdays fall on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. Because the date already lands on a working day, no substitute day is needed.
The date is one day earlier than in 2026, when Thanksgiving fell on 26 November. Our United States 2027 public holidays page lists 15 entries under the National, Substitute and Bank rule, and Thanksgiving appears once, as a National row, with no observed partner. The same page shows why November 2027 is quiet: Veterans Day, 11 November, is also a Thursday.
When is Thanksgiving 2027 in Canada?
Canadian Thanksgiving 2027 is Monday, 11 October — the second Monday in October. October 2027 begins on a Friday, so the Mondays are the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, and the second of those is the 11th. It always lands on a Monday, which is the biggest structural difference from the American version.
There is a coincidence worth flagging. Monday 11 October 2027 is also Columbus Day in the United States. Both countries are off on the same weekday for entirely unrelated reasons, which makes that Monday one of the busiest travel days of the 2027 autumn in North America. The Canada 2027 holiday list carries 8 National entries, and Thanksgiving is one of them.
Why the two dates are 45 days apart
From 11 October to 25 November 2027 is 45 days. The gap is not an accident of the calendar. It comes from two different anchoring rules: Canada ties Thanksgiving to a Monday in early October, the United States ties it to a Thursday in late November.
The windows are narrow. A second Monday in October can only fall between 8 and 14 October. A fourth Thursday in November can only fall between 22 and 28 November. In 2027 those windows produce 11 October and 25 November, close to the middle of both ranges, so the two Thanksgivings read as different seasons rather than the same festival moved a few days.
Both dates were fixed by legislation, not by harvest timing. Canada settled on the second Monday in October by proclamation in 1957. The United States fixed the fourth Thursday in November in federal law in 1941, replacing a last-Thursday rule that had caused confusion through the late 1930s.
Read the other way, those 45 days explain a staffing problem. A US employer running a Canadian payroll deals with two separate autumn peaks. A Canadian team serving US clients loses a Thursday six weeks after its own Monday off. Thanksgiving 2027 never touches a weekend in either country, so no substitute date appears on either calendar.
Ten calendars, eight dates
Ten of the 192 calendars we track list a holiday with Thanksgiving in its name for 2027. They land on eight different dates, from 5 August to 26 December. Every row below is a single National entry — none of them is typed Observance, Religious or Regional, which is why all ten count as public holidays under our rule.
| Calendar | 2027 date | Day | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Croatia | 5 August | Thursday | Fixed date |
| Saint Lucia | 4 October | Monday | First Monday in October |
| Canada | 11 October | Monday | Second Monday in October |
| Grenada | 25 October | Monday | Last Monday in October |
| Liberia | 4 November | Thursday | First Thursday in November |
| Japan | 23 November | Tuesday | Fixed date |
| United States | 25 November | Thursday | Fourth Thursday in November |
| American Samoa | 25 November | Thursday | Follows the US federal date |
| Palau | 25 November | Thursday | Fixed date |
| Solomon Islands | 26 December | Sunday | Fixed date |
Three calendars share 25 November 2027: the United States, American Samoa and Palau. It is the only date in the table with more than one entry. It is also the only one that arrives by two different routes: a weekday rule in Washington and a fixed date in Ngerulmud.
The October cluster is the densest part of the Thanksgiving 2027 picture. Saint Lucia takes the first Monday, Canada the second, Grenada the last, so the three dates are spaced almost exactly three weeks apart: 4, 11 and 25 October. All three are Mondays and all three create a three-day weekend. The Grenada 2027 holiday list is the busiest of the three, with 17 National entries.
Which Thanksgivings create a long weekend in 2027
We count a long weekend as three or more unbroken days off, where a day qualifies if it is a public holiday or a Saturday or Sunday. Applied to 2027, five of the ten Thanksgiving entries produce a run of three days or more. The other five fall on a Thursday or a Tuesday with a working day on each side.
| Calendar | Thanksgiving 2027 | Days off created | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saint Lucia | Mon 4 October | Sat 2 – Mon 4 October | 3 |
| Canada | Mon 11 October | Sat 9 – Mon 11 October | 3 |
| Grenada | Mon 25 October | Sat 23 – Mon 25 October | 3 |
| Palau | Thu 25 November | Thu 25 – Sun 28 November | 4 |
| Solomon Islands | Sun 26 December | Sat 25 – Tue 28 December | 4 |
The United States does not make that table, and it is the detail most readers get wrong. Thanksgiving 2027 falls on a Thursday, Friday 26 November is a normal working day, so the break is Saturday and Sunday only — two days, not three. Book Friday off and it becomes four. Our US long weekends 2027 page counts nine three-day runs for the year and none of them falls in November.
Grenada’s 25 October is the last Monday of the month, the latest a Monday Thanksgiving can sit in October 2027. The same rule gives 30 October in 2028 — five days later — while the weekday stays fixed. That drift is why a date copied from the previous year is never safe, and why the calendar is rebuilt each year rather than rolled forward.
Palau and Solomon Islands: the two four-day runs
Only two Thanksgiving 2027 entries give four consecutive days, and both come from a second holiday sitting next to the feast. Palau pairs Thanksgiving on Thursday 25 November with Family Day on Friday 26 November, and the pair runs straight into the weekend. The Palau 2027 holiday calendar lists both as National, so the four days need no leave at all.
Solomon Islands works the other way round. Christmas Day 2027 falls on a Saturday and the National Day of Thanksgiving on Sunday 26 December. Both are moved forward — Christmas to Monday 27 December, Thanksgiving to Tuesday 28 December — so the country gets Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December as one block. That is the only four-day Thanksgiving run in December anywhere in our 192 calendars.
Liberia, Japan and Croatia: the name without the harvest
Three entries carry the word and not the American meaning. Liberia’s Thanksgiving Day on 4 November 2027 follows the first-Thursday rule, close to the US one but a week earlier this year. Liberia’s actual November long weekend comes from something else: Goodwill Day on Monday 29 November, which closes out Saturday 27 to Monday 29.
Japan’s 23 November is Labor Thanksgiving Day, a fixed-date holiday about thanking workers rather than a harvest feast, and it falls on a Tuesday in 2027. Croatia’s 5 August entry is a victory and homeland-gratitude day. We keep both in the list because the name matches, and flag them because the meaning does not.
Japan is the clearest case of a date that looks generous and is not. The Japan 2027 public holidays page lists 17 entries, and 23 November sits four days after a weekend and one day before a working Wednesday, so it creates no run of three.
How we count these dates
Every number here comes from the 2027 calendars published on this site. A date counts as a public holiday only when its type is National, Substitute or Bank. Observance, Religious and Regional rows are excluded, which is why a country can look short here and long in another list that mixes in state and religious days.
Long weekends are computed, not copied. We merge a country’s public holidays with its Saturdays and Sundays, then count every unbroken run of at least three days as one long weekend. A run that starts on 31 December and continues into the following year is not counted against 2027. Easter Monday is always typed National on this site, including in Ireland, so it can never be missed by the filter.
Each date was checked twice: once against the site’s 2027 calendar, and once against the rule that generates it — fourth Thursday in November, second Monday in October, first Thursday in November. Where a country uses a fixed calendar date, the fixed date is the check. Both checks agreed for all ten entries.
The scan behind this article covered all 192 calendars for 2027 and 2,809 individual holiday rows: 2,581 National, 218 Substitute and 10 Bank. Eleven of those rows contain the word Thanksgiving, but only ten are separate holidays, because the Solomon Islands observed day repeats the name of its Sunday entry. That is how the count came out at ten rather than nine or eleven.
What our calendar does not show
Two gaps matter for Thanksgiving. Canada’s 2027 page lists eight National entries, while the Canada Labour Code’s general holiday list is longer and provincial lists longer still. A reader in Nova Scotia may see a different working day from a reader in Ontario, and our calendar shows the national layer only.
The United States has no federal Thanksgiving substitute in 2027 because the date already falls on a Thursday. States that treat the Friday after Thanksgiving as a holiday do so under their own rules. Those rows are Regional by our definition, so they stay out of the count even though millions of people get the day.
One more limit: if a government moves a Thanksgiving date by decree after publication, our page will lag until the next update. Every country page carries a date stamp for exactly that reason. We would rather show a checked date with an old stamp than an unchecked date with a fresh one.
For planning, the shift from 2026 to 2027 matters more than the absolute dates. Thanksgiving 2027 is one day earlier than 2026 in both countries, so any recurring entry built on last year’s date is wrong by a day. Our 2027 long weekend guide holds the full year in one place if you need a run that is not tied to Thanksgiving.
