US Long Weekends 2027: All 9 Three-Day Breaks

In short: The United States observes 11 federal holidays in 2027, and they create 9 three-day weekends without a single day of annual leave. Two of the eleven — Veterans Day and Thanksgiving — fall on a Thursday, so one extra day off turns each of them into a four-day break.

11 October 2026 — Every date below comes from our United States 2027 public holidays page, which lists each federal holiday with its exact date, weekday and type. We count a date only when its type is National, Substitute or Bank; observances are excluded. This guide takes those eleven dates and works out which of them create US long weekends in 2027, and where a single day of leave buys a fourth day off.

What counts as a long weekend here

A long weekend is any run of three or more consecutive non-working days created by a public holiday touching a weekend. Saturday and Sunday count in full. When a holiday falls on a weekend and the day off is moved, it is the moved date that creates the break, not the legal date.

We count each continuous block once: two holidays in the same week are one long weekend, not two, and days that fall outside calendar 2027 are noted but not included in the totals.

This matters because a raw holiday count hides the pattern. The country with the most public holidays is not automatically the country with the most long weekends — what decides it is where the dates fall in the week, not how many there are.

Every US long weekend in 2027

Nine blocks of three or more consecutive days off fall inside calendar 2027, and all nine are exactly three days long. They are listed in date order below. The final column shows the weekday the holiday is actually observed, which is the day that carries the break.

Long weekend Days Federal holiday Weekday off
Fri 1 – Sun 3 January 3 New Year’s Day Fri 1 Jan
Sat 16 – Mon 18 January 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Mon 18 Jan
Sat 13 – Mon 15 February 3 Washington’s Birthday Mon 15 Feb
Sat 29 – Mon 31 May 3 Memorial Day Mon 31 May
Fri 18 – Sun 20 June 3 Juneteenth National Independence Day Fri 18 Jun
Sat 3 – Mon 5 July 3 Independence Day Mon 5 Jul
Sat 4 – Mon 6 September 3 Labor Day Mon 6 Sep
Sat 9 – Mon 11 October 3 Columbus Day Mon 11 Oct
Fri 24 – Sun 26 December 3 Christmas Day Fri 24 Dec

Three of the eleven legal dates fall on a weekend in 2027 — Juneteenth on Saturday 19 June, Independence Day on Sunday 4 July and Christmas Day on Saturday 25 December. Each is observed on the nearest weekday instead, so the long weekends do not disappear; they simply move. That pattern is worth understanding before booking anything, because the date on the calendar and the date you actually get off are not always the same.

For a broader view of how other countries shape the same year, our long weekends guide for 2027 compares the runs created by holidays in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Nine of eleven federal holidays land on a Monday or Friday

Count the observed dates and the reason for 2027’s crowded long-weekend calendar becomes obvious. Nine of the eleven federal holidays are observed on a Monday or a Friday, which is why they attach to a weekend without any leave at all.

Six legal dates are already Mondays — Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day — plus New Year’s Day, which falls on Friday 1 January. Three more land on a weekend and are moved to the nearest weekday. Only two holidays, both in November, break the pattern.

The complete set is published on the United States holiday hub, which also holds the 2025 and 2026 calendars for comparison. Zooming out, the 2027 public holiday calendar shows how those same eleven dates sit against the rest of the world.

Two Thursday holidays that stretch to four days

Veterans Day and Thanksgiving are the two dates that do not hand you a free three-day weekend in 2027. Veterans Day falls on Thursday 11 November and Thanksgiving on Thursday 25 November, so each sits one working day away from the weekend that follows it.

That is good news for anyone with leave to spend. Taking Friday 12 November off turns Veterans Day into a four-day break from Thursday to Sunday. Taking Friday 26 November off does the same for Thanksgiving, and because the two holidays are a fortnight apart, a single week of leave can span both November blocks.

The maths is simple: two days of leave convert two single-day holidays into two four-day breaks. No other month in 2027 offers that return, which is why November is the month most worth planning first. Employers are not required to close on these days, so anyone relying on a retail, hospitality or shift schedule should confirm their own roster rather than assume the federal calendar applies.

The Christmas and New Year cluster

The end of 2027 is unusual, because the year finishes with two long weekends a week apart rather than one. Christmas Day is observed on Friday 24 December, giving Friday to Sunday off, and New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday 1 January, so it is observed on Friday 31 December 2027.

Between them sit four ordinary working days, Monday 27 to Thursday 30 December. Book those four days and you connect the two breaks into a continuous eleven-day run from Friday 24 December to Monday 3 January 2028. Without leave, you still get two separate three-day weekends at the very end of the year.

Neighbouring calendars handle the same week differently. The United Kingdom 2027 public holidays move both Christmas Day and Boxing Day into the following Monday and Tuesday, producing one longer block rather than two separate ones. Comparing the two is a useful reminder that the number of holidays rarely matters as much as how the dates fall.

How the observed-day rule moves three holidays in 2027

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, most federal employees receive the preceding Friday off; when it falls on a Sunday, they receive the following Monday. The rule comes from 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) and is applied by the US Office of Personnel Management.

Because of that rule, Juneteenth (legal date Saturday 19 June) is observed on Friday 18 June, Independence Day (Sunday 4 July) on Monday 5 July, and Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December) on Friday 24 December. Our United States 2027 page labels these three entries as Substitute, so they are never confused with the legal dates.

The rule does not apply to everyone. Part-time and intermittent federal employees are not entitled to a substitute day when a holiday falls on a non-workday, and employees on compressed or non-standard schedules have their own arrangements. State governments and private employers set their own policies, and many follow the federal calendar only loosely.

What this list does not cover

This guide covers the eleven federal holidays only. It does not include state-level observances such as Cesar Chavez Day in California, Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts or Texas Independence Day, because those are Regional-type entries and they differ by state. Some of them do create long weekends in their own states.

It also excludes observances that are not days off for most workers. Easter is the clearest example: Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays across much of Europe and the Commonwealth, but neither is a federal holiday in the United States. Our Easter 2027 guide explains the dates and lists the countries that do take the days off.

Finally, this is a calendar guide, not an entitlement guide. Whether you personally receive a day off depends on your employer, your contract and your state, and schools and businesses frequently follow their own schedules rather than the federal one.

Where state calendars add breaks the federal list misses

Federal holidays set a floor, not a ceiling. Most states add at least one observance of their own, and when those extra dates land on a Monday or a Friday they create long weekends that never appear on the national list.

Massachusetts observes Patriots’ Day on the third Monday in April, which in 2027 falls on the 19th and produces a three-day weekend. Texas keeps two spring dates, Texas Independence Day on 2 March and San Jacinto Day on 21 April, though neither is a full statewide closure for private employers. California lists Cesar Chavez Day on 31 March, and several states mark the day after Thanksgiving as an official holiday rather than a working Friday.

None of these appear in the eleven federal dates, because our United States 2027 public holidays page records them as Regional type and excludes them from the national count. That distinction matters when you compare states side by side: the gap between a state with four extra dates and one with none can be wider than the federal calendar itself. If you live in one of those states, check your own state calendar before treating the federal list as complete.

How to plan around the 2027 long weekends

Start with the nine free breaks, because they cost nothing. New Year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Christmas are all three-day weekends that need no annual leave, and each one is fixed well in advance.

Then spend leave where it converts best. Friday 12 November and Friday 26 November are the two highest-value days of the year, each turning a one-day holiday into a four-day break. The four days between Christmas and New Year — Monday 27 to Thursday 30 December — are the only way to join two long weekends into one unbroken stretch.

Beyond the United States, the same analysis can be run for any country in our North America public holidays section, which collects the year pages for Canada, Mexico and the surrounding region and lets you compare where their breaks land against the US calendar.

About Public Holiday Calendar

Public Holiday Calendar is an independent reference for public holidays in 192 countries and regions, with 575 year pages covering 2025, 2026 and 2027. Every country page lists the exact date, weekday and type of each holiday, so readers can see at a glance which days are National, which are Substitute days and which are bank holidays.

We count a date as a public holiday only when its type is National, Substitute or Bank. Observances, religious commemorations and regional holidays are recorded separately and excluded from our holiday totals. Where a country’s data is incomplete or a source is unavailable, we say so rather than fill the gap.
