About these holidays in Russia (2027)
Our Russia public holidays guide explains the background of each holiday and how the dates are set.
New Year Holidays
New Year holidays refers to the multi day public holiday period surrounding 1 January. Several countries, including Japan, Russia, Vietnam and much of Eastern Europe, close for several consecutive days so that families can travel and gather. The specific dates and the number of days off are set annually by government decree, and where a holiday falls at a weekend the following working day is often substituted.
Christmas Day
Christmas Day on 25 December is the Christian feast of the Nativity of Jesus and one of the most widely observed public holidays in the world. It is a legal holiday in most nations with Christian majorities or heritage, and a cultural holiday in many others. Customs include family gatherings, gift giving, special meals and decorated trees. Countries following the Julian or Oriental Orthodox calendars often celebrate on 7 January instead.
International Women's Day
International Women's Day on 8 March celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and calls attention to gender equality. It grew out of labour movement campaigns in the early twentieth century and was adopted by the United Nations in 1975. In a number of countries, especially in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and parts of Africa, it is an official public holiday, and flowers are traditionally given to women.
Victory Day
Victory Day commemorates a decisive military victory, most commonly the Allied victory in Europe in 1945. Russia and several post Soviet states observe it on 9 May with large military parades and the Immortal Regiment marches, while Western Europe marks 8 May. Other countries use the name for different conflicts. Ceremonies usually include laying wreaths at war memorials and honouring surviving veterans.
