About these holidays in India (2027)

Republic Day

Republic Day marks the anniversary of the founding of a republic or of the adoption of a republican constitution. India observes it on 26 January with a large military and cultural parade in New Delhi, Italy on 2 June, Turkey on 29 October and Iran on 1 April. It is generally a public holiday characterised by official ceremonies, flag displays and speeches reviewing the institutions of the state.

Eid al-Fitr (estimated)

Eid al-Fitr is the festival that ends Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, and begins on the first day of Shawwal. It is a two or three day public holiday across much of the Muslim world. The date depends on the sighting of the new moon, so published calendars mark it as estimated until it is confirmed. Families gather for prayer, shared meals and charitable giving before the fast was broken each evening of Ramadan.

Good Friday

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter and commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. It is a public holiday in most countries with Christian traditions, and businesses, banks and schools often close. Observance is typically solemn, with church services, processions and in some places Passion plays. The date moves each year because Easter is calculated from the first full moon following the March equinox.

Eid al-Adha (estimated)

Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, falls on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah during the annual Hajj pilgrimage. It honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Muslims who can afford it sacrifice an animal and share the meat with family, neighbours and the poor. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the Gregorian date moves about ten days earlier each year and is listed as estimated.

Ashura (estimated)

Ashura falls on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed for different reasons across the Muslim world. For Shia Muslims it is the central commemoration of the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala, marked by mourning ceremonies. For many Sunni Muslims it is a day of voluntary fasting. It is a public holiday in several countries, and the date is published as estimated.
