About these holidays in Mozambique (2026)
Our Mozambique public holidays guide explains the background of each holiday and how the dates are set.
Women's Day
Women's Day is celebrated on 8 March as International Women's Day, recognising the achievements of women and campaigning for gender equality. It developed from early twentieth century labour and suffrage movements in Europe and North America and was formally adopted by the United Nations in 1975. In a number of countries it is a public holiday, and it is traditional to give flowers and small gifts to women.
International Workers' Day
International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, is observed on 1 May in most countries of the world. It originated in the campaign for an eight hour working day and commemorates the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886. It became an official holiday across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa during the twentieth century. Observances typically combine trade union marches and rallies with springtime festivities.
Victory Day
Victory Day commemorates a decisive military victory, most commonly the Allied victory in Europe in 1945. Russia and several post Soviet states observe it on 9 May with large military parades and the Immortal Regiment marches, while Western Europe marks 8 May. Other countries use the name for different conflicts. Ceremonies usually include laying wreaths at war memorials and honouring surviving veterans.
Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day honours a nation's military services and the people who serve in them. The date and the name differ by country: the United Kingdom observes it in late June, Nigeria on 15 January, Pakistan on 6 September and Thailand on 18 January. Typical observances include military parades, air displays, open days at bases and ceremonies recognising veterans and serving personnel.
