Christmas 2027: A Saturday, and 13 Four-Day Breaks

In short: Christmas Day 2027 falls on Saturday 25 December, with Boxing Day on Sunday 26 December. Thirty-six of the 192 calendars we track carry a Christmas replacement on Monday 27 December, and 13 countries end up with four straight days off.

2 November 2026 — A fixed feast on a moving weekday is the whole story of Christmas 2027. The date cannot change; the day off can, and in 2027 it moves in three different directions depending on the country. Every figure below is read from the 2027 public holiday calendar, counting only entries typed National, Substitute or Bank across 192 countries.

When is Christmas 2027?

Christmas Day 2027 is Saturday 25 December. Boxing Day, the second statutory day of the Christmas period in most Commonwealth calendars, is Sunday 26 December. The first ordinary working day afterwards is Tuesday 28 December, unless a country has shifted one or both holidays into the working week.

That combination is unusual. A Saturday Christmas means the statutory date never meets a working day, so nobody takes 25 December itself off work. The day off has to be created somewhere else, which is why the Monday after Christmas carries more legal weight in 2027 than the date itself.

The last Saturday Christmas was 2021 and the next is 2032. Between the two, 25 December works through every other weekday: Monday in 2028, Tuesday in 2029, Wednesday in 2030 and Thursday in 2031. That makes Christmas 2027 the second and last Saturday edition of the 2020s.

Why a Saturday Christmas moves the day off, not the date

Most labour codes separate the holiday from the day it is observed. The holiday is 25 December. The day off is whichever weekday the statute assigns to it. When the two collide with a weekend, the law normally pushes the day off to the next available working day, and that is the row our calendars type as Substitute.

For Christmas 2027 the same mechanism produces three different outcomes. Six countries pull Christmas backwards to Friday 24 December. Thirty-six push a Christmas holiday forwards to Monday 27 December. The rest list only 25 December and let the weekend absorb it, with no replacement at all.

That last group explains why this article counts calendars instead of assuming them. Our 2027 pages for Australia, Canada, France and Brazil list 25 December as the Christmas public holiday and nothing on 27 December. Employers there may still grant a substitute under a workplace agreement, but the national calendar does not record one, and we do not invent it.

The Christmas week at a glance

Christmas 2027 is not one date but a seven-day sequence, and each day in it carries a different legal weight. The table below shows what the 192 country calendars record for every date in the window, counted as calendars that list at least one public holiday on that day.

Date Day What the calendars record Calendars
6 January Wednesday Epiphany, Armenian and Orthodox Christmas 17
7 January Thursday Orthodox and Coptic Christmas Day 12
24 December Friday Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day observed backwards 19
25 December Saturday Christmas Day, the statutory date wherever it is kept 147
26 December Sunday Boxing Day, Second Day of Christmas, Saint Stephen’s Day 64
27 December Monday Christmas or Boxing Day replacement 36
28 December Tuesday Second replacement day, mostly Boxing Day observed 12

The counts overlap by design: a country with a four-day break appears on four consecutive rows. Read them as calendars that list a holiday on that date, not as countries that celebrate it. The distinction matters most for 25 December, where Taiwan’s entry is Constitution Day rather than Christmas.

The 26 December row is the most crowded of the seven. Thirty-two calendars call it Boxing Day and fifteen call it the Second Day of Christmas. Ireland, Italy and the Holy See name it after Saint Stephen, South Africa marks it as Day of Goodwill, and Namibia and Vanuatu record a Family Day. One date, five statutory labels, all typed National.

Which countries get the longest Christmas break

In Christmas 2027, 13 countries get four consecutive days off, from Saturday 25 December to Tuesday 28 December, because both of their Christmas holidays land on the weekend and both are replaced. Bulgaria goes one day further and starts on Friday 24 December, where Christmas Eve is itself a statutory holiday.

Country Days off Length
Bulgaria 24 to 28 December 5 days
Antigua and Barbuda 25 to 28 December 4 days
Fiji 25 to 28 December 4 days
Guyana 25 to 28 December 4 days
Holy See 24 to 27 December 4 days
Kiribati 25 to 28 December 4 days
Malawi 25 to 28 December 4 days
Nauru 25 to 28 December 4 days
New Zealand 25 to 28 December 4 days
Nigeria 25 to 28 December 4 days
Sierra Leone 25 to 28 December 4 days
Solomon Islands 25 to 28 December 4 days
Tuvalu 25 to 28 December 4 days
United Kingdom 25 to 28 December 4 days

The four-day group is not a ranking of generous labour law. It is a list of countries whose statute covers two consecutive Christmas days, whether that pair is Christmas Day and Boxing Day or Christmas Day and a second day of Christmas, and which replace each one separately when both fall on a weekend. A country with a single statutory day cannot build four days this way.

Twelve of the thirteen are Commonwealth countries, which is also why they share the Boxing Day structure. The Holy See is the exception: it closes on 26 December for Saint Stephen and on 27 December for Saint John the Evangelist, two separate feast days that happen to close the same four-day window.

New Zealand and the United Kingdom are the two largest members, and both follow the same sequence: Christmas Day observed on Monday 27 December, Boxing Day observed on Tuesday 28 December. The United Kingdom 2027 public holidays page and the New Zealand 2027 holiday dates page each place the two Substitute rows directly beside the two National ones.

Bulgaria’s run is the longest in the dataset. Christmas Eve on Friday 24 December, Christmas Day on Saturday and Sunday, then the observed Christmas Day on Monday 27 and a second observed day on Tuesday 28. Five consecutive days, and the Bulgaria 2027 holiday list records every one of them as National or Substitute.

Countries that move Christmas to Friday 24 December

Christmas 2027 is the exception for six calendars that observe the holiday on Friday 24 December: the United States, American Samoa, Micronesia, Palau, Ecuador, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Each replaces the Saturday holiday with the last working day before it rather than the first working day after.

The United States is much the largest of the six. Its United States 2027 public holidays page lists Christmas Day on 25 December and a Substitute on Friday 24 December, then closes the year the same way, because New Year’s Day 2028 is also a Saturday and its observed date falls on Friday 31 December 2027.

For anyone booking from the United States, the practical result is a three-day weekend from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 December rather than the Saturday-to-Monday shape that Britain and New Zealand get. The difference shows up in return flights: the American break ends on Sunday night, while the four-day group is still off on Tuesday.

Orthodox and Coptic Christmas in January 2027

Christmas 2027 is not finished on 28 December for everyone. Twelve calendars list a Christmas Day on 7 January 2027, a Thursday: Russia, Belarus, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea. Moldova keeps 8 January as a second Christmas day.

Armenia and Lebanon mark Christmas on 6 January instead, following the Armenian Apostolic date, and Slovakia’s 6 January entry is named “Epiphany (Three Kings’ Day and Orthodox Christmas)”. In Eastern Europe the two feasts are often bundled into a single statutory line rather than separated into two holidays.

None of the January dates creates a long weekend in 2027. 6 January is a Wednesday and 7 January a Thursday, so the midweek Christmas sits alone in every calendar that observes it, and a bridge day of annual leave is the only way to reach three days off.

Where 25 December is a holiday but not Christmas

Two Asian calendars reach the 25 December list without celebrating Christmas. Taiwan’s public holiday that day is Constitution Day, and the calendar places its observed day on Friday 24 December rather than the Monday after. South Korea takes the other route: Christmas Day is a national holiday on Saturday 25 December, and the calendar adds an alternative holiday on Monday 27 December.

South Korea is therefore one of the 36 calendars with a Christmas replacement on 27 December, but for a different reason from Britain. Its Monday replaces Christmas Day itself rather than a second Christmas holiday, so the Korean break is three days, from Saturday to Monday. The South Korea 2027 holidays page lists both rows, 25 December as Christmas Day and 27 December as an alternative holiday, both typed National.

The 36 calendars with no Christmas public holiday

One hundred and fifty-six of the 192 calendars list at least one Christmas-related public holiday in 2027, so Christmas 2027 is a public holiday for roughly four fifths of the world we cover. The other 36 do not, and that list reads as a map of where December is an ordinary working month rather than a holiday season.

  • Middle East and North Africa: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania and Somalia.
  • Central and South Asia: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and the Maldives.
  • East and Southeast Asia: China, Japan, North Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia and Bhutan.

Two of the 36 still close on 25 December under another name, which is why the count follows holiday names rather than shop shutters. Mozambique marks the day as Family Day and Taiwan as Constitution Day. Montenegro has no December public holiday at all, and the Japan 2027 public holidays finish on 23 November with Labor Thanksgiving Day, seven weeks before Christmas.

Europe shows the opposite pattern, where a second day of Christmas does the heavy lifting. The Germany 2027 public holidays page, like the Netherlands, Denmark and Slovakia pages, lists 25 and 26 December as two separate National holidays. Yet none of the four adds a replacement day in 2027: their calendars simply stop at the weekend, the clearest illustration of a two-day structure without a substitute rule.

Planning notes for December 2027

Three dates in Christmas 2027 matter more than the rest. Friday 24 December is the last working day before Christmas across most of Europe, and the day six countries close for an observed Christmas. Monday 27 December is a public holiday in 38 calendars and a normal Monday in the other 154, which splits meetings, deliveries and support rotas down the middle.

Tuesday 28 December is the first working day for most of the world and a fifth consecutive day off in Bulgaria. It is also the only day in the week when a holiday in one country coincides with a full working day in its neighbours, so cross-border travel on that Tuesday runs at two speeds at once.

For planning on working days rather than holidays across Christmas 2027, the arithmetic is short. It removes one working day, Monday 27 December, across most of Europe and the Commonwealth. It removes none in Australia, Canada, France or Brazil, where the weekend absorbs the holiday. It removes two in Britain, New Zealand and the rest of the four-day group. The long weekends in 2027 guide applies the same counting method to the rest of the year.
