In short: Japan has 17 public holidays in 2027 โ 16 National days plus one Substitute โ and together they create 7 long weekends. Six of those breaks last three days, and Golden Week, from 1 to 5 May, is the only one that runs five.
30 October 2026 โ Japan long weekends 2027 come down to seven blocks of days off. Each date below is taken from our Japan 2027 public holidays page, where a day counts only if its type is National, Substitute or Bank. A holiday joined to a Saturday and Sunday counts as a single break. All 17 dates match the Cabinet Office list.
Japan long weekends 2027 at a glance
Ten of the 17 holidays sit beside a weekend, and because several land on a Monday, the year produces seven separate long weekends rather than scattered single days. Each of the seven is listed below with the holiday that anchors it.
- 1โ3 January (FriโSun) โ New Year’s Day opens the year with a three-day break.
- 9โ11 January (SatโMon) โ Coming of Age Day, the second Monday of the month.
- 20โ22 March (SatโMon) โ Vernal Equinox Day falls on a Sunday, so the following Monday is taken in lieu.
- 1โ5 May (SatโWed) โ Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day run into the weekend for five days.
- 17โ19 July (SatโMon) โ Marine Day, the third Monday of July.
- 18โ20 September (SatโMon) โ Respect for the Aged Day, the third Monday of September.
- 9โ11 October (SatโMon) โ Sports Day, the second Monday of October and the last break of the year.
The seven holidays that miss out fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday: 11 February, 23 February, 29 April, 11 August, 23 September, 3 November and 23 November. None can reach a weekend without a day of leave. Mid-August Obon is not a statutory holiday either, so the Japan public holidays hub carries only Mountain Day in August.
Why only one holiday gets a substitute day
Japan pays back a holiday that lands on a Sunday: the next day that is not already a holiday becomes a day off. In 2027 that happens once, when the Vernal Equinox lands on Sunday 21 March and pushes a substitute onto Monday 22 March. Every other holiday falls on a weekday or a Saturday, so no further substitute is needed.
Japan has a second rule that turns a lone workday wedged between two holidays into a holiday. It does not fire in 2027. Respect for the Aged Day on 20 September and the Autumnal Equinox on 23 September leave two working days between them, and two is one too many, so September offers three days instead of five.
Golden Week 2027: five days off from 1 May
Golden Week is the exception to the three-day pattern. Showa Day opens it on Thursday 29 April, and one working Friday separates that date from the main run: Saturday 1 May to Wednesday 5 May, carrying Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day. Book the Friday off and both pieces join into seven consecutive days.
Add 6 and 7 May and the stretch reaches 11 days, at a cost of three days of leave. Our Japan Golden Week 2027 guide covers the travel side of that window, including how domestic crowding builds across the five days.
How Japan 2027 compares with 2026
Japan lists 18 public holidays in 2026 against 17 in 2027, and the gap shows up in the breaks: eight long weekends this year, seven next year. The Japan 2026 holiday calendar includes 22 September as a National Holiday, the sandwiched day between Respect for the Aged Day and the Autumnal Equinox, and that extra date turns 19โ23 September into a five-day Silver Week.
Two other shifts matter. In 2026 the substitute day lands in May, pushing Children’s Day to 6 May; in 2027 it moves to March instead. After 11 October there is no further long weekend, because Culture Day and Labor Thanksgiving Day both fall midweek.
