New Year's Day
New Year's Day falls on 1 January and opens the Gregorian calendar year. Most countries mark it with a public holiday, and celebrations usually begin the night before with countdowns, fireworks and gatherings. The date was fixed in its current position by Julius Caesar's calendar reform, and later preserved by the Gregorian reform of 1582. traditions vary widely, from first-footing in Scotland to writing resolutions for the months ahead.
Independence Day
Independence Day marks the anniversary of a nation's formal separation from another state, or of the founding moment of its sovereignty. Because it commemorates a specific historical event, the date differs from country to country and the name often includes the year. Typical observances include flag raising, military parades, speeches by heads of state, and public concerts. It is frequently the most prominent national holiday on the calendar.
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, begins on the new moon between late January and mid February. It is a public holiday in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea and in many countries with large Chinese communities. Celebrations last fifteen days and close with the Lantern Festival. Families reunite, exchange red envelopes, honour ancestors and watch lion and dragon dances.
Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day honours a nation's military services and the people who serve in them. The date and the name differ by country: the United Kingdom observes it in late June, Nigeria on 15 January, Pakistan on 6 September and Thailand on 18 January. Typical observances include military parades, air displays, open days at bases and ceremonies recognising veterans and serving personnel.
Myanmar New Year
The Myanmar New Year, known as Thingyan, marks the start of the Burmese calendar and usually falls in mid April. It is one of the longest and most important public holidays in Myanmar, with official closures lasting several days. The festival is best known for its water throwing, understood as washing away the sins and misfortunes of the old year. Traditional foods such as mont lone yay baw are prepared and shared.
