About these holidays in Kazakhstan (2027)
Our Kazakhstan public holidays guide explains the background of each holiday and how the dates are set.
New Year's Day
New Year's Day falls on 1 January and opens the Gregorian calendar year. Most countries mark it with a public holiday, and celebrations usually begin the night before with countdowns, fireworks and gatherings. The date was fixed in its current position by Julius Caesar's calendar reform, and later preserved by the Gregorian reform of 1582. traditions vary widely, from first-footing in Scotland to writing resolutions for the months ahead.
New Year's Day (observed)
Where 1 January falls at a weekend, several countries shift the public holiday to the following Monday or to another weekday, and the substituted date is labelled as observed. This ensures a day off is not lost to the weekend. The holiday itself opens the Gregorian calendar year and is celebrated with countdowns, fireworks and gatherings that usually begin on New Year's Eve.
International Women's Day
International Women's Day on 8 March celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and calls attention to gender equality. It grew out of labour movement campaigns in the early twentieth century and was adopted by the United Nations in 1975. In a number of countries, especially in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and parts of Africa, it is an official public holiday, and flowers are traditionally given to women.
Constitution Day
Constitution Day commemorates the adoption or signing of a country's constitution. The date varies by nation: Norway marks 17 May, Denmark 5 June, Poland 3 May, Spain 6 December, India 26 January and Japan 3 May. It is usually a public holiday marked by official ceremonies, parades and educational events about citizenship. In several countries it is treated as a celebration of national identity as much as of the legal document itself.
Victory Day
Victory Day commemorates a decisive military victory, most commonly the Allied victory in Europe in 1945. Russia and several post Soviet states observe it on 9 May with large military parades and the Immortal Regiment marches, while Western Europe marks 8 May. Other countries use the name for different conflicts. Ceremonies usually include laying wreaths at war memorials and honouring surviving veterans.
