New Year's Day
New Year's Day falls on 1 January and opens the Gregorian calendar year. Most countries mark it with a public holiday, and celebrations usually begin the night before with countdowns, fireworks and gatherings. The date was fixed in its current position by Julius Caesar's calendar reform, and later preserved by the Gregorian reform of 1582. traditions vary widely, from first-footing in Scotland to writing resolutions for the months ahead.
Constitution Day
Constitution Day commemorates the adoption or signing of a country's constitution. The date varies by nation: Norway marks 17 May, Denmark 5 June, Poland 3 May, Spain 6 December, India 26 January and Japan 3 May. It is usually a public holiday marked by official ceremonies, parades and educational events about citizenship. In several countries it is treated as a celebration of national identity as much as of the legal document itself.
Children's Day
Children's Day celebrates children and promotes their welfare and rights. The date varies considerably: 1 June in many former Soviet and Eastern European countries, 20 November in others following the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and different national dates elsewhere. In several countries it is a public holiday. Schools, families and communities hold events, and children receive gifts and special attention.
